Preparing Your Roof for Winter in Columbus, OH
The fall checklist that keeps Ohio roofs out of trouble: ice dam prevention, ventilation, flashing checks and gutter prep.

An Ohio roof spends winter under conditions it will not see the rest of the year: weeks of freeze-thaw cycling, snow that sits, ice that builds, and months when nobody can safely get up there to fix anything. Which is the whole argument for a fall checkup — winter does not create most roof problems, it finds the ones already there and makes them expensive. Here is what is actually worth doing before the first hard freeze.
Understand the ice dam, and you understand winter roofing
Most winter roof damage in Ohio traces back to one mechanism. Heat escaping into the attic warms the roof deck; snow on the warm deck melts from underneath; the meltwater runs down to the cold overhang at the eave and refreezes. The ridge of ice that builds there — the dam — backs the next round of meltwater up under the shingles, and shingles are designed to shed water running down, not resist water pooling up. The stains appear on the ceiling below the eaves, usually in February.
The counterintuitive fix: a colder roof. Sealing attic air leaks, topping up insulation, and keeping ventilation clear so the deck stays near outdoor temperature does more against ice dams than any amount of roof-raking. Heat cables are a patch for problem spots, not a substitute.
The fall checklist
- Clean the gutters after leaf fall. A leaf-packed gutter freezes into a solid ice beam that pries at the fascia all winter and gives ice dams a head start.
- Look at the shingles from the ground. Binoculars, all four sides. Curled, cracked or missing shingles that would be minor autumn repairs become February leaks once the snow sits on them.
- Check the flashing points. Chimneys, walls, valleys and pipe boots are where most winter leaks start. A cracked rubber pipe boot is a trivial fall fix and a miserable January one.
- Visit the attic. Look for daylight, stains, damp insulation, and blocked soffit vents — insulation pushed into the eaves is the most common ventilation problem in older houses and a direct contributor to ice dams.
- Trim what overhangs. Branches over the roof drop their load in ice storms. The time to deal with them is while they are wood, not while they are wood plus ice.
During the winter itself
Two habits, neither requiring a ladder. After heavy snow, a roof rake used from the ground to clear the first few feet above the eaves takes the raw material away from ice dams — gently, without scraping the granules off. And keep half an eye on the eaves after cold snaps: small icicles are cosmetic, but a thick ice shelf at the gutter line means a dam is forming, and interior stains mean water is already moving.
What not to do
Winter roof panic produces its own damage. Do not chip or hammer at an ice dam — every blow that breaks ice also breaks shingles, and the meltwater finds the new cracks. Do not throw rock salt on the roof; it stains shingles, corrodes gutters and kills whatever the runoff lands on (calcium chloride in a sock, laid across the dam, is the gentler version if you must act). And do not climb onto a snowy roof, full stop. Nothing up there in January is worth what the fall costs.
The step most people skip
Everything above is observation you can do yourself. What it cannot do is see a bruised shingle field up close or judge how much life the flashing really has.
